Teach a complete history by unearthing stories “out of the margins.”

3pm – 5pm   Workshops in the Village

Two concurrent one-hour workshops focusing on life in rural New England will be offered by educators and interpreters at Old Sturbridge Village.  These workshops will model programs offered for students and provide resources developed by the Village for teachers of literacy in K-12 education. 

  •  Abolition and Social Change in 19th-Century New England
    Through primary sources and interactive experiences throughout the Village, you will learn about the ways in which the Northern states participated in the institution of slavery in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, as well as the ways that some people fought against this system. 

  •  Town Meeting on Poor Relief in the 1830s
    In this civics-focused program you will participate in a mock town meeting to learn how local government functions. The program explores the essential question “How should our town care for its poorest citizens?”

5:30pm-7pm    Panel Presentation on Engaging Students in Exploring Stories of Marginalized Groups

Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) and Old Sturbridge Academy (OSA) educators will lead a panel presentation and workshop on how to engage students in exploring stories of marginalized groups in the early 1800s using resources of the Village in printed texts, songs, illustrations, and historical artifacts.  OSV and OSA educators will describe their Foundations of Interpretation project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities to create more inclusive educational programming at both the museum and the school.  A special focus of the panel presentation will be an exploration of the book Out of the Margins: Contributions Toward a More Complete History of 1800s New England which was researched, written, and illustrated by students and staff of OSA.  OSV will also present the many resources for teachers designed to introduce the stories of people, especially people of color, for all students.
