Advocacy
IRA's Governmental Relations Committee advocates for legislation that will improve literacy instruction through responding to state and federal lawmakers, department of education officials, and through MRA publications. Each February, delegates attend the annual Governmental Relations Workshop sponsored by the International Reading Association in Washington, D. C. where they visit the offices of MA Congressmen and Senators. The Committee provides guidelines for writing and visiting lawmakers, samples of editorial letters, telephone interviews, and other persuasive written documents.
The IRA's Legislative Action Team (LAT) is a national network of IRA members who advocate for legislation that promotes literacy and quality reading instruction. You can join the LAT through online registration at IRA and, as a member, you will receive regular updates from IRA on the educational issues being addressed by Congress.
Contact Evelyn Wall and Cynthia Rizzo, Co-chairs of the Committee, if you are interested in becoming a member of the MRA Governmental Relations Committee or have any questions regarding advocacy initiatives. |
